Presentation of Dr Clément Harmange's research work

On February 6, 2025, Dr. Clément Harmange, postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of São Paulo, presented his research work.

Title of the presentation : Assessing Wild Boar Risks to Agriculture in Brazil

Abstract : Reconciling agricultural productivity with ecosystem preservation is a pressing challenge. However, the question of how to reduce the non-negligible loss of productivity and human well-being caused by ecosystem disservices, such as pest-induced crop damage or disease outbreaks in livestock farms, remains paramount to optimizing agricultural productivity and promoting sustainable farming systems. We focus on wild boar, a species ranked among the 100 worst invasive species and the 5th most costly in terms of invasion-related economic impacts. Using a unified interdisciplinary framework, we aim to assess the risks of wild boar’s negative impacts on agriculture. The results should allow us to identify areas at high risk of crop damage and/or disease transmission to farm pigs. Ultimately, this should enable us to develop guidelines for territorial resource allocation and management to promote more sustainable agricultural systems.
